Quick Start

The installer has put a startup-script called jpicedt in the shortcut directory you specified.

To launch the application, just type jpicedt on the command line (Unix and MacOS X systems), or click on the shortcut (Windows platforms).
NOTE : On Unix/Windows platforms, you may want to increase the value of the JAVA_HEAP_SIZE variable in the startup-script, especially if you run out of memory at some point.

If you installed the add-ons package, there's a bit of configuration to be carried out if you want to be able to run LaTeX, DVI, Ghostview, etc... from inside jPicEdt. jPicEdt runs external programs by means of scripts (e.g. .bat files on Windows), which can be found in the add-ons subdirectory of jPicEdt's install directory. Currently, there exists scripts for the following LaTeX distribution :

Unix : TeTeX
Windows : MikTeX and WinGUT (besides, documentation is available for Scientific Workplace users).

All you need to do if your distribution belongs to this list, is to tell jPicEdt what scripts to use. This is done in the "Preferences/Commands" menu, by pressing the Load Predefined Configuration button, and browsing through the add-ons directory structure until you find a configuration file appropriate to your LaTeX distribution.
If your LaTeX distribution doesn't belong to the list, then you'll have to write your own script. Feel free to contact us in this case.

Contribution

We widely encourage you to share your contribution to jPicEdt with the users community. Please send an email to syd@jpicedt.org, subject=contribution. Writing BeanShell macros, i18n resources (see lang/ subdirecory) or fragments is probably a good start !

In particular, contributing i18n (i.e. translations) resources is pretty easy :

Copy one of the existing translation resource files in jpicedt-install-dir/lang/ (for instance, i18_en.properties) to a new resource file with the approriate language code (for instance, i18_it.properties for the italian language), IN THE SAME DIRECTORY.
Language codes are availables at : http://www.ics.uci.edu/pub/ietf/http/related/iso639.txt.
Translate messages from the original language to the target language.
Launch jPicEdt if it's not running yet, open the Edit->Preferences panel, and select the new language in the General subpanel.
Re-launch jPicEdt, and you'll have a GUI localized to the new language !
