There's the NTS project FAQ on CTAN (e.g., ftp.tex.ac.uk) as file tex-archive/info/NTS-FAQ; Philip also spoke at Santa Barbara, so that there'll be a paper about NTS in the proceedings edition of TUGboat. joel@wmi.com (Joel Coltoff) wrote: >>Jonathan Fine: Using TeX in Radical Ways >> >> Jonathan will talk about work he has in progress to use TeX as a >> processor in ways Knuth never intended it for. > >The grammar in this sentence shows that someone, somewhere is >using English in ways that it was never intended for. It would go away if you got the most recent release from one of the 3 CTANs, eg ftp.tex.ac.uk, in /tex-archive/macros/latex/unpacked (or in packed version in .../latex/base), and created a new format file (there is a Makefile.unx so you can just say "make" and then -- after putting in target directories in the Makefile -- "make install"). Nb You don't need to upgrade or change the basic tex programs in any way. If you don't want to do this you can print any character in a font by eg \symbol{93}; and you can print out the font to find where characters are by "latex testfont" -- you will be asked what font you want. Don't know, but this is better anyway: \catcode`#=\active \def#{{\it\$}} Note for those without 8-bit clean news connections: the character after \catcode` is the UK pound sign -- octal 243 (decimal 163) in the ISO Latin 1 character set This means that you can *type* a pound sign and have it come out as one when you print. For emacs you'll also need at least some of (load "iso-syntax") (global-unset-key "\M-#") ; I want to print a pound sign, ; not load calc ... (set-input-mode (car (current-input-mode)) (nth 1 (current-input-mode)) ; recognise high bit as Meta 0) (standard-display-european 1) in your .emacs Daniel ------------------------------ Date: 24 Oct 1994 16:05:03 +0000 From: ken@erg.abdn.ac.uk (Kenneth Ord) Subject: LaTeX style for IEE Colloquium Does anyone know if there is a LaTeX style available for IEE colloquium articles? Can someone tell me where I have omitted to use the \fbox command?? 2) Where can I get new fonts to use in LaTeX?? I am thinking of buying one from Linotype-Hell or Monotype and would appreciate advice on the formats required. One hopes you haven't hacked yourself a copy of report.sty (though that's not really the point); these sorts of changes should be put in a .sty file of your own, and included as in \documentstyle[...,yourown,...]{report} >2) Where can I get new fonts to use in LaTeX?? In order to do this in a remotely sensible way, you need to use LaTeX2e (which you obviously don't). Once you're using 2e, there's a fontinst package which does the necessary for you. It's not (particularly) for the faint-hearted, but it does work pretty well. Note that there's a CHEST deal on a decent subset of the Monotype fonts CD, which you may be able to persuade your University to subscribe to, at a useful saving of the contents of your pocket. Running fontinst is (as I said) non-trivial, but once you've got the hang of it it's pretty mechanical. The big problem (imho) is choosing the font you actually want to use (indeed, choosing a selection of fonts that match -- a serifed family, an unserifed family, and a monospaced family, all of which match each other, are needed.
