In the past I have only ever > transferred .zip files from the archive with no problem. Can you > advice me on how to unzip, unencode these .zip_vve files. History: In the (original) UK TeX archive, we have always had a problem getting the VMS file format of binary files correct so that coloured book software could transfer them. In the past, we fixed files by hand. But now that the Daughter archive is talking automatically to other archive machines, and updating things on a daily basis, we dont have manpower to go in and fix up files on the VMS system; and we have not found a way of mirroring the Unix archive to the VMS system to end up with the file types we need. Therefore, we made a pragmatic decision to store all files on the VMS system in plain ASCII form, by encoding the binaries (including .zip files). Because of the special problems of VMS file formats, none of the existing encoders was good enough, so Neil Kempson wrote VVCODE. Action: You need a copy of vvdecode to unpack x.zip_vve. You can find the relevant program source (in C, carefully tested to be portable) in [.archive-tools.vvcode], and compiled binary versions in [.archive-tools.vvcode.binaries] for various systems. Please contact us if you have problems with all this; we need your patience and understanding getting this new system reliable. If you are interested in VVCODE details, do *not* however contact the archivists direct, but join a list called VVCODE-L by sending a message subscribe vvcode-l to list_server@uk.ac.tex Sebastian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Mar 1993 13:57:15 -0100 From: Peter J Knaggs Subject: Re: C to TeX, anyone? > Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1993 15:04:40 > From: anoop@parcom.ernet.in (Anoop Sarkar) > Subject: C to TeX, anyone? > > Is there a program available which will allow me to convert C source > code into a TeX file. Being too lazy to build TeX from scratch for myself, I recently downloaded the Sun4 binaries (for which effusive thanks) from Aston. All is well EXCEPT that mf appears to want a reference to _mf_x11_initscreen satisfied by a shared library, and it isn't. (There were other problems, both with mf and with xdvi, but they went away when I got hold of X11R5 shared libraries for the Sun4.) What's my next step (other than tangling with web and rebuilding things against the libraries I actually have)? I'm running SunOS 4.1.3 and OpenWindows 3.0, by the way. (Please reply to me directly -- I don't subscribe to the list, only seeing the digest on netnews. Thanks.) When I do that, I think the most sensible thing will be to compile MF *without* X support at all, and let those people who want that do a recompile. the alternative is to build everything with static libraries which I might do. > when I got hold of X11R5 shared libraries for the Sun4.) What's my next > step (other than tangling with web and rebuilding things against the > libraries I actually have)? that *is* your next step. should be no more than "configure; make MF" in the source directory what an honour to have the "british-national-corpus" on board.... sebastian rahtz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1993 19:02:55 +0700 From: Petra zur Lage Subject: Floating table and figures in LaTeX Here is another trivial question: Can anybody tell me how to stop table and figure captions from floating about!!? OzTeX has a good dvi-to-ps driver, but it cannot handle pstricks (especially rotation which seminar.sty uses). I have today received by post the announcement and booking form for the Aston Conference. It contains no hint whatsoever of the content of the conference - number of papers, categories, not even names of keynote speakers (who have surely been booked), or the start and end times on the Monday and Friday. In other words, I am asked to book 100pounds + ? accommodation for a pig in a poke. Most "5 day" conferences use the first and last days as only half days, to allow travel. If overseas visitors are expected to come for courses, will they be willing to hang around for two and a half days between conference and course? Is it expected that all conference delegates will attend for the full 5 days? Have even speakers been informed whether their papers have been accepted? Am I alone in thinking that sendout this mailing with no programme information is likely to be a fruitless and counter-productive exercise? This meeting is not an unknown quantity - it is 14th in a regular series of conferences held for members of the Tex Users Group (it isn't an open meeting), which all have a similar format of presentations and discussions and courses about, yes you guessed it, TeX. > end times on the Monday and Friday. Sebastian Rahtz acting chairman, tug93 committee ------------------------------ Date: 26 Mar 1993 18:13:28 +0000 From: spqr@uk.ac.york.minster Subject: AUC TeX version 7.0 There has been a major new release of the AUC-TeX gnuemacs lisp package for editing TeX documents. It can be found in ftp.tex.ac.uk:pub/archive/support/auctex tex.ac.uk:[tex-archive.support.auctex] and (imminently) on the Stuttgart and SHSU archives with which Aston works. A short description is appended for those who are not aware of the package. Sebastian Author=Kresten Krab Thorup Description=AUC-TeX is a comprehensive customizable integrated environment for writing input files for LaTeX using GNU Emacs. AUC-TeX lets you run TeX/LaTeX and other LaTeX-related tools, such as a output filters or post processor from inside Emacs. Especially `running LaTeX' is interesting, as AUC-TeX let's you browse through the errors TeX reported, while it moves the cursor directly to the reported error, and displays some documentation for that particular error. This will even work when the document is spread over several files. AUC-TeX automatically indents your `LaTeX-source', not only as you write it---you can also let it indent and format an entire document. It has a special outline feature, which can greatly help you `getting the overview' of a document. Apart from these special features, AUC-TeX provides an large range of handy Emacs macros, which in several different ways can help you write your LaTeX documents fast and painless. All features of AUC-TeX are documented using the GNU Emacs online documentation system. That is, documentation for any command is just a key click away! AUC-TeX is written entirely in Emacs-Lisp, and hence you can easily add new features for your own needs. It was not made as part of any particular employment or project (apart from the AUC-TeX project itself). AUC-TeX is distributed under the `GNU Emacs General Public License' and may therefore almost freely be copied and redistributed. ------------------------------ Date: 26 Mar 1993 20:32:41 +0000 From: spqr@uk.ac.york.minster Subject: archiving and encoding methods in the UK TeX Archive The announcement of AUC-TeX version 7.0 prompts me to ask all users of the TeX Archive to be aware of four bits of information that might affect your lives: a) The two UK TeX Archive machines, ftp.tex.ac.uk (Daughter) and tex.ac.uk (Dad), are now working in tandem. Daughter acts as the master (mirroring material from other sites) and copies changed files to Dad every night. the directory structures are identical, and are also used in the Stuttgart and SHSU archives. b) because of the needs of JANET file transfer users, all binary files (includes font metrics, PKs etc) are stored *encoded* on Dad, using the VVCODE program. You need a copy of vvdecode to unpack them. See [.archive-tools.vvcode.binaries] for your poison (sorry, not for Macs yet. on its way). c) The archiving method of choice in the archive is the public domain ZIP. This is compatible with PKZIP 2.x, but *not* with the older (and very common) pkzip 1.x. You *must* upgrade your unzipper soon to take advantage of things d) for good or bad, many packages end up being wrapped up as Unix compressed tar archives, since this is how their authors maintain them; we pick them automatically from the authors and do not have the resources to repackage them. Tools for decompression and detarring for most systems can be found in [.archive-tools] on Dad and pub/archive/archive-tools on Daughter. BUT you should also know that Unix compress (.Z suffix) is being commonly replaced by the Free Software Foundation's replacement, gzip (suffix .z). Since the Vax (Dad) has case-insensitive filenames, you cannot tell the difference if you retrieve from Dad. MORAL - dont mail us to say "this package is corrupt" until you have tried gzip as well as uncompress on it. gzip is (naturally) also in the archive-tools directory. There is a school of thought that the archivists plot to make your life a misery. This is true. But please remember we are driven by a) market forces (people want up to date copies of things) and b) poverty (we have no labour to convert things).
